Slowly slowly

In the last week – despite starting to feel physically improved – I have been seriously struggling to find my motivation, except for when it comes to sitting about doing nothing at all. The usual get up and go attitude has been more along the lines of get up slowly, go unwillingly then finish early and have a little rest.

The idea of riding home from work with Roxy at the end of the week filled me with excitement and whilst it felt great to be back in the saddle, it also made me realise that it’s going to be a bit of a long-winded process to get fit again. I was knackered and achy by the time I got home and ended up failing to engage in any other sort of activity for the evening, including going for drinks (for which I received a considerable amount of abuse).

I have even brought gym kit to work on a daily basis only to get to my lunch break and have to concede that I am just a little bit too tired to do anything much at all – and that lack of energy makes me very sad!

When you’re out of the habit of training, getting back into the regime is always an effort, not only because you are much more unfit and it hurts more than usual, but because it is so frustrating to have to do everything slowly or gently. I have had several mini tantrums and some “WHAT IS THE POINT!?” moments as a result of not being able to push myself to where I want to be.

However, progress has been made. I even managed a little and very steady jog at the weekend which was good for my mental sanity if nothing else. The key is to take a big, deep breath, be patient and not try to rush myself into doing what I was doing before.

..and to stop eating cookies.
